Here we are providing you different ways to use SLmgr. Carefully read them and follow:
To use this tool, you all want to launch a Command Prompt with Administrator access. For this on Windows 8 or 10, press Windows+X or right-click the Start button.
In the menu click the Command Prompt option that appears. Now on Windows 7, search the Start menu for Command Prompt, right-click it and select “Run as Administrator”.
Note: On the Power Users menu, if you see Powershell instead of Command Prompt, which is a switch that came about with the “Creators Update for Windows 10”. You can do everything in Powershell that you can do in Command Prompt.
Run the command ‘slmgr .vbs /dli’ to display very basic license and activation information about the current system.
This command will tell you the edition of Windows, part of the product key so that you can identify it, and the system is activated or not. In order to display more detailed license information including installation ID, activation ID, and other details – run the command ‘slmgr .vbs /dlv’.
Run the command ‘slmgr .vbs /xpr’ to display the expiration date of the current license. This will only work for the Windows system activated from an organization’s KMS server, as multiple activation keys and retail licenses result in a perpetual license that doesn’t expire. It will give you an error message if you haven’t provided a product key.
From your current Windows system with Slmgr, you can remove the product key. Restart your computer and run the command slmgr .vbs /upk. The Windows system will not have a product key and will be in an unactivated & unlicensed position. In case you want to install windows from a retail license and would like to use that license on another PC, then this allows you to remove the license.
It will also help you if you are giving that computer away to someone else. However, most of the Windows licenses are connected to the computer they came with unless you have to purchase a boxed copy. Uninstall the current product to remove it. Run the command ‘slmgr .vbs /upk’ and then restart your computer.
Windows also stores the product key in the registry as it is sometimes essential for the key to be in the registry when setting up the computer. Run the command ‘slmgr .vbs /cpky if you have uninstalled the product key to make sure that it is removed from the registry as well. Keep in mind that running this command alone will not uninstall your product key.
It will remove it from the registry and that is why programs cannot access it from there, but your Windows system will remain licensed unless you have to run this command to actually uninstall the product key. This option is designed to prevent the key from being stolen by malware.
To enter a product key use slmgr.vbs. In case the Windows system already has a product key, using the command ‘slmgr .vbs /ipk #####-#####-#####-#####-#####’ will replace the old product key with the one you provide.
The command will check the product key you enter to make sure it is valid before using it. MS office recommends you to restart your computer after running this command.
